£4.6 million for injuries at birth

A six-year-old Norfolk boy has won £4.6 million in compensation after incurring serious brain damage during his birth in 2004, reports the BBC.

His lawyers argued that the damage occurred when midwives failed to notice that the baby’s heartbeat was abnormal. The lawyers claimed that the normal heartbeat the midwives were listening to, believing it to be the baby’s, actually belonged to the mother.

Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn NHS Trust says it agreed to the settlement, without accepting liability, to avoid the cost and time of going through a court case.
